In the week were the outgoing Mayor Kevin Callan is associated to an article stating Democracy was under attack, the question is what Democracy?
The new Mayor of Drogheda is due to be voted on this coming Monday 8th June at 6pm in Barlow House, and it may come as shock to some, that decision may have been already made before the vote even takes place. My prediction is that on Monday Labour Party Cllr Pio Smith will be announced as the new Mayor of Drogheda, not because he is Favourite but because he is next in line. ever wonder why a Sinn Féin Councillor has never had the title of Mayor, is it because there is a pack, a group of councillors that vote in block to control the council, if so were is the Democracy in that. are these the only Councillors who can become Mayor over the next 5 years.
Cllr Kevin Callan – Independent Fine Gael
Cllr Pio Smith – The Labour Party
Cllr Richie Cullhane – Fine Gael
Cllr Paul Bell – The Labour Party
Cllr Oliver Tully – Fine Gael
Cllr Frank Godfrey – Independent
So is it out of the 10 sitting councillors do these 6 control everything? if so it can only be described as a real attack on Democracy.
Direct Democracy Ireland have set about trying to change this system and have come under increasing attack in recent weeks, just because we will not dance to their tune, is that their idea of democracy then who is attacking who?
