The Government announce today the release of 300 Million Euros from a 4 Billion Euro commitment to provide 35,000 social housing units by 2020.
Today’s 300 Million will provide 1,700 new housing units by 2017 according to the government.
Local Authorities have started to confirm that an average of 75% of funds released will be used to pay landlords for properties rented by Local Authorities due to the lack of new social housing units.
That leaves 1 Billion Euros for Local Authorities to build new social housing units.

Today we are told that 300 Million Euros will provide 1,700 new units by 2017.
That’s the Government’s way of saying each new unit will cost, in total 176,470 Euros per unit.

With nearly half of the 90,000 people on the Housing Waiting Lists living in Dublin, it makes perfect sense that half the funding goes to Dublin. That’s good management. That leaves roughly 150 Million Euros available to the rest of the country from today’s grand gesture of 300 Million.
Last month alone, the government committed 86 Million Euros to Kildare County Council and just over 30 Million Euros to Enda’s County’s Council. Unless the Government has forgotten how to bullshtt, that leaves 34 Million Euros available to the rest of the country from today’s grand gesture of 300 Million. Killarney, Co. Kerry was promised 1 Million. That leaves 33 Million.

According to Government Statements, that leaves approximately, and at a generous estimate, 1 Million Euros for most Local Authorities to spend on Social Housing from today’s allocation.
According to Government estimates, that equates to 187 houses, or, at a community level, about 8 new houses for every county outside Dublin, Kildare or Enda. Sorry, Mayo.

The Government is not providing Social Housing, it is Buying Votes.

According to their own estimates and targets, the Government have committed to providing 33,000 new social housing units between 2017 and 2020.
You are being lied to and laughed at.
Providing 1,700 new social housing units by 2017 leaves the government embarrassingly far behind it’s own commitment to tackle the housing issue, and makes a mockery of any attempt they make to suggest otherwise.
Announcing the provision of 1,700 new social housing units by 2017 will distract from the confirmed abolition of Mortgage Interest Relief in 2017. That will provide the state with some of the money it obviously does not have to invest real solutions in housing issues.
Announcing the provision of 1,700 new social housing units by 2017 confirms, according to government figures that between 2017 and 2020, there will be just 700 Million Euros available from the original 4 Billion to fund the construction of new social housing units.

While lying about its ability to solve the housing crisis the Government is set to withhold 400 Million Euros in aid to its own people with the abolition of Mortgage Interest Relief and undoubtedly add to the ever increasing problem of homelessness.
This is an austerity measure; it is a tax in all but name.

Today the Government will add to any statement on Social Housing that its plans will create 200 – 300 new jobs. That’s just another carrot.
The Government recently committed to allowing the construction industry access to JobBridge victims. The State is planning to spend money it doesn’t have using slave labour to build houses it cannot afford. That’s a big stick.

The Government will sell you their solution to the housing issue today while engaging directly in behaviours that will add to the housing crisis.

Make your own Propaganda.
